Growing design: paddenstoelenpaviljoen
The Dutch Design Week (DDW, from 19 – 27 October in Eindhoven) presented eight design trends this year that, according to the organization, currently indicate the most important developments within the world of design. One of them was living natural materials.
Designers find all kinds of creative ways to use biobased materials for a wide variety of projects. For example, bio-residual waste, such as pine needles or coffee grounds, is converted into other raw materials, but living material is also used. And so Growing Design was one of the trends that was brought to the fore during the DDW. This was done, among other things, in the form of the DDW pavilion on Ketelhuisplein, realized this year by Nieuwe Helden from Amsterdam. They developed Growing Pavilion based on organic material as the building material of the future: it. This structure is made entirely of organic material, built entirely from biobased materials with an important role for growing mycelium.
Mycelium is the network of all threads of a fungus/mushroom. After the fungus itself has been made inactive, a fine-meshed network remains. The application of this mycelium material has many possibilities. It is light but also strong and suitable for use as a building material.
