ECO pole used for the first time

May 30, 2024 – The so-called Blent housing project in Lent (The Netherlands) has an underground scoop. For the first time, a sustainable variant of a concrete pile is being used. According to the developers (the IJB Group in collaboration with construction company Heijmans), this new variant, the so-called ECO pile, offers the same properties as a traditional pile, but with significantly lower CO2 emissions, which ensures an important sustainability gain.

The ECO pole has a solid reinforced concrete head at both ends, but is hollow on the inside. This results in less concrete in total, but the load-bearing capacity is retained.

With a cavity that saves 30 percent of concrete, the ECO pile leads to a CO2 reduction of about 25 percent. The pile has the same dimensions as traditional piles, making it easy to apply this new technology to existing projects. The lighter pile also ensures more efficient transport with fewer CO2 emissions, using an electric truck.
