Reducing Tire Wear and Its Environmental Impact

May 20, 2025 – The new Euro 7 standard introduces limit values for tire wear for the first time, posing a challenge for the tire industry. In response, four Fraunhofer institutes, led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability (LBF), have launched a project to develop new methods essential for creating more environmentally friendly tire materials.

Through the ‘TERIS’ project, the consortium aims to develop an AI-supported, standardized production and measurement methodology to analyse rubber wear in the laboratory. (TERIS stands for Technology Platform for Tire Abrasion and Emission Identification in Road Traffic.) The project’s goal is to predict the distribution of released particles and to assess their environmental impact. The results are expected to provide new impetus across the entire tire industry supply chain and will also inform simulations of vehicle fleets.
