Enzymes could recycle plastic collected from the sea

July 17, 2026 -The Spanish plastics research institute AIMPLAS recovered from the ocean are often too degraded for conventional mechanical recycling because prolonged exposure to sunlight, salt water and waves weakens their structure.

Researchers are identifying bacteria and enzymes capable of breaking down different types of plastic. Using genetic analysis, molecular modelling and laboratory testing, they aim to determine which enzymes are most effective. The resulting materials could then be reused as raw materials for new products.

The project concentrates on marine litter collected by fishing vessels. By converting damaged plastic into valuable resources, the researchers hope to reduce waste, support a circular economy and contribute to cleaner oceans.
