October 22, 2026 – The Lage Weide Asphalt Plant (ACLW) in Utrecht has officially opened. The facility is capable of producing asphalt using up to 100 percent recycled materials. This is combined with lower production temperatures and technologies designed to limit emissions, odors, and noise.
The plant is an initiative of the Theo Pouw Group and AsfaltNu (a joint venture between BAM and Heijmans). The partners combine their knowledge of raw materials and recycling with expertise in asphalt development, contributing to the maintenance and renewal of infrastructure while ensuring consistent quality and reliable supply. The facility reuses old asphalt and secondary raw materials. It employs heat recovery, drying techniques, flue gas cleaning, and a closed-system loading process. The production process is fully enclosed to minimize noise pollution. Furthermore, a thermal cleaning system breaks down substances such as PAHs and benzene, keeping emissions well below legal limits.
With a permitted annual production capacity of 500,000 tons of asphalt, an hourly capacity of 240 tons, and 1,600 tons of heated storage, ACLW serves the Utrecht region and the rest of the Netherlands.
