Chalk-based coating creates a cooling fabric
August 21, 2024 – In the scorching summer heat, anyone who spends time outdoors—athletes, landscapers, kids at the park, or beachgoers—could benefit from a cooling fabric. While there are textiles that reflect the sun’s rays or pull heat away from the body, current options require boutique fibers or complex manufacturing processes. But now, researchers report a sustainable chalk-based coating that cools the air beneath treated fabric by up to 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
Evan D. Patamia, a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will present their team’s findings at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Fall Meeting. ACS Fall 2024 is a hybrid meeting held virtually and in person from August 18 to 22; it will feature approximately 10,000 presentations on a range of scientific topics.
