Digital models speed up development of higher-performance batteries

1 June 2026 – Researchers at Fraunhofer ITWM are using digital simulations and intelligent sensors to improve battery manufacturing. By creating digital twins of production lines, manufacturers can test different production settings virtually before making changes to real equipment.

The technology monitors key manufacturing steps, including electrode mixing, coating and drying. Sensors continuously collect production data, allowing digital models to identify opportunities for improvement in real time. This reduces production errors and minimises material waste.

According to the researchers, the approach could accelerate the development of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. At the same time, production becomes more stable and product quality improves, resulting in more reliable and efficient battery manufacturing.
