August 29, 2024 – Transparent like glass, but heat- and scratch-resistant like ceramic: transparent ceramics outperform glass and sapphire in terms of robustness, hardness, transmission and cost-effectiveness. It is therefore expected that transparent ceramics will be used even more in the future. However, production not only requires special know-how, but also specialized equipment and systems. For this reason, the Fraunhofer-Institut für Keramische Technologien und Systeme (IKTS) opened a new research and development center specifically for transparent ceramics on August 29. The center has an infrastructure for the entire process chain for the production of transparent ceramic components, not only on a laboratory scale, but also on a pilot and series scale.
