Fraunhofer LBF seeks safer flame retardants to replace TCPP in polyurethane foams

11 November 2025 – Germany’s Fraunhofer LBF has launched the SuFlaPUR project to investigate new flame retardants for polyurethane foams. The widely used additive TCPP helps prevent mattresses, furniture and insulation from catching fire, but can be released during use and is suspected of being carcinogenic and harmful to reproduction. Within SuFlaPUR, LBF and industrial partners aim to develop TCPP-free alternatives that are cost effective yet meet strict fire safety standards for both flexible and rigid foams. Researchers will test a range of formulations and link the chemical structure of candidate compounds to their performance in foam. The goal is to find practical additives that fit into existing production lines while reducing health and environmental risks associated with polyurethane products.
