April 30, 2025 – Following a pilot project in Heerenveen last year, in which fiber hemp was grown on 6.5 hectares, Heijmans has decided to expand cultivation to 23.5 hectares this year. The company will use the resulting material to insulate homes in the Thedamaborg project in Nietap (Drenthe), with construction scheduled to begin this year. This expansion is being carried out in collaboration with GreenInclusive, a company based in Drachten dedicated to advancing a sustainable (construction) economy.
According to Heijmans, fiber hemp is not only a sustainable raw material but also boosts biodiversity. The crop attracts insects, while its deep roots improve soil structure—benefiting soil life and subsequent crops. It grows quickly, enhances soil quality, yields a high output per hectare, and requires relatively little water, nutrients, and labor. Additionally, it needs no pesticides or fertilizers and captures CO₂ during its growth.
