March 13, 2026 – Researchers of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new method to produce steel with reduced reliance on imports and lower energy consumption. The process uses alternative raw materials and a modified chemical pathway, partially replacing traditional blast furnaces. This not only lowers emissions but also makes production more flexible and scalable. The approach may strengthen domestic steel supply, which is economically and strategically important. It also allows existing facilities to be adapted instead of fully replaced, speeding up implementation. Although further scaling is required, early results indicate strong potential for industrial use.
