New eco-friendly composite for 3d-printed bat roosts

October 28, 2024 – Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed a new biomaterial specifically for custom 3D-printed bat habitats. According to Oak Ridge, the eco-friendly composite offers a sustainable alternative to synthetic materials for artificial habitats. In terms of shape, the scientists tried to imitate the bats’ favorite shelters. The material is made from pinewood flour and polylactic acid polymer, which is biodegradable. It could also be used for other artificial shelters, such as birdhouses and bee hotels, and could even be adapted to make lightweight components for electric vehicles, for instance.
