January 20, 2025 – The Zero Emissions Metal Production (FME ZeMe) research center aims to achieve a carbon-neutral metals industry in Norway by 2050. This was reported by SINTEF, the Norwegian Foundation for Industrial and Technical Research (Stiftelsen for industriell og teknisk forskning).

The Norwegian metals industry, the country’s third largest export sector after fish and oil, is one of Europe’s most important suppliers of low-emission metals and strategic raw materials. With an annual export value of around NOK 100 billion and a contribution to 11 percent of Norway’s land-based CO2 emissions, the sector faces significant challenges and opportunities.

Over the next eight years, FME ZeMe aims to develop knowledge and technology through intensive collaboration between industry, research institutions and academia that will enable a carbon-neutral and energy-efficient metals industry by 2050.
