Plastic substitute PHA2USE wins Circular Award 2024
March 14, 2024 – The Circular Awards 2024 were presented during the National Circular Economy Conference (NCCE) on March 14. Plastic substitute PHA2USE has won an award in the ‘Public’ category. PHA2USE was developed by five Dutch water boards, STOWA, Paques Biomaterials and waste processing company HVC Group.
The plastic substitute PHA2USE is described as a natural plastic substitute from residual flows that has the advantages and properties of plastic, but not the disadvantages. The effect is as follows: wastewater contains many fatty acids. The bacteria in the demonstration unit consume the fatty acids and convert them into a new material that can replace plastic. Just as humans store fat in the body, these bacteria store this material as an energy reserve in their cells. This substance is removed, leaving a powder. This powder can be used as a natural plastic substitute in various applications.
