Sand-filled dampers could make structures safer and stronger

8 July 2026 – Researchers at the University of Mississippi have shown that sand-filled dampers could provide a durable alternative to conventional oil-based vibration dampers. These devices are widely used in high-rise buildings, bridges and other structures to reduce vibrations caused by wind, traffic or earthquakes. By absorbing mechanical energy, they reduce stress on structural components and help extend the service life of buildings.

The study found that sand-filled dampers continue to perform effectively under both high and low temperatures. Their performance is also largely unaffected by moisture. Compared with liquid-filled systems, they are less expensive to manufacture, easier to maintain and can be repaired much more quickly if damaged.

The research team plans to evaluate the technology in full-scale structures. If future tests confirm the results, sand-filled dampers could provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to improve the safety and durability of buildings and bridges.
