Subsidy companies for research into circular plastic

June 3, 2024 – Companies make produce plastic products can apply for a subsidy from June 18, 2024 to investigate how they can use more circular plastic. A total of €49 million is available for this until 2030. This allows plastic processors to carry out technical tests to investigate whether they can replace part of the fossil plastic in their production process with recycled or bio-based plastic. Recycled plastic is plastic from waste that can be used again as a plastic raw material after collection and processing. Bio-based plastic is made from, for example, plant (residues) or algae.

Plastic is currently mainly made from fossil raw materials such as oil and natural gas. Because these raw materials are finite and a lot of CO2 is released during production, companies that make plastic (part) products must make more use of recycled and bio-based plastic.

In the Netherlands, approximately 8 % of plastic (part) products are currently made with recyclate. Bio-based plastic is only used to a very limited extent. That percentage must increase.
