TNO and Thorizon investigate materials for a new generation of nuclear reactors

October 14, 2026 – The Dutch research institute TNO and the technology company Thorizon have launched a research program to test materials for a new generation of nuclear reactors. The focus is on so-called molten-salt reactors, in which materials must be able to withstand high temperatures, corrosive salt, and radiation for years on end. The results are intended to contribute to the development and safe application of this reactor technology.
Molten-salt reactors belong to a relatively new generation of nuclear reactors. They operate at a relatively low pressure and, according to their developers, offer the potential for safe and efficient energy production. Furthermore, certain designs can reduce the amount of long-lived radioactive waste.
