World’s first perovskite solar roof tile

April 2, 2026 – Researchers at TNO have successfully installed a perovskite solar module on foil onto a roof tile. Despite the curved shape, the roof tile solar module has an energy efficiency of 12.4 percent. This is an important step towards better integrating solar energy into the built environment. This creates more space for sustainable electricity generation, without placing additional strain on the landscape or infrastructure.
The perovskite solar module on flexible foil was installed on a curved plastic roof tile in collaboration with ASAT B.V. Measurements show that bending the module on the roof tile has only a limited effect on efficiency. The individual modules achieved an energy efficiency of up to 13.8 percent. After mounting on a curved roof tile, 12.4 percent was maintained.
